Will India Embrace Google Inc. Chromecast?

The Google Chromecast is not a new device. In fact, the technology was released by Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) over a year ago in the US and a few selective international markets. Officially, the Chromecast never reached India, until now.

Finally, the device has been launched to the Indians at a subtle price of RS. 2999. Considering the fact that Chromecast is available in the US starting $25, and the fact that the dollar to rupee exchange rate stands at RS. 61, it is obvious that the device is more expensive in India than in the US. According to analysts, the shipping cost, combined with dealing with third party sellers to sell the device on behalf of Google, adds to the cost and results in its higher price for Indian consumers. However, at RS. 2999, Google Chromecast is still a very nice bargain for Indians, who are rapidly incorporating technology into their daily lives.

India is one of the fastest growing markets in the IT sector and launching Google Chromecast in it is a very wise step by Google. Google Chromecast is a dongle that utilizes the HDMI port of TV to establish a wireless connection between it and any other device that supports it. Basically, the device allows for an HDMI connection wirelessly, eliminating the need for an HDMI cable entirely. Not only that, but the device can also easily establish a connection between a TV and a Smartphone, through Wi-Fi, and also laptops and PCs on the network. Connection with smartphones is established using an app, which can be acquired through Google Play Store and also through Apple App Store on iPhone/iPad. This is not all.

Google Chromecast has a built-in operative system that allows it to connect to some video streaming websites, allowing users to access them without connecting to a computer/smartphone/tablet. However, not all services can be accessed on the Google Chromecast; users can access only those services that Google has signed deals with. Currently, in the US, Netflix, Hulu, Youtube and the Google Play Store can be accessed to stream content on TV using Chromecast. In India, however, services like Netflix and Hulu don’t work. Therefore, Google Chromecast, with help from its sellers in India, has established a deal with local streaming services like Eros Now, Spuul, as well as YuppTV, to allow streaming services to its users; Google will still provide its other services i.e. Youtube, and Google Play Store.

Chromecast has been heavily publicized in India by Airtel as well as Eros, both of which have incorporated their services within the device through subscription offers.

Initial response seems to be excellent, with a great chunk of the market enthusiastic and excited to get its hands on the new device by Google. The boost given by local streaming services has given Google Chromecast a more homely appeal and has definitely done wonders for its demand. As the global world, including India, moves to streaming entertainment more than cable channels, a device like Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Chromecast is well-received. India should be no different in this respect.
