Bitcoin (BTC) continues to make headlines as numerous entities experiment with the virtual currency. The latest to try out something completely new was CBC, which could very well go down in history as the very first public radio station to transmit digital currency over radio waves.
During “The Morning Edition” in the Kitcherner-Waterloo area in the province of Ontario, the network was successful in its attempt to air a series of beeps over the radio. Listeners were then asked to decipher the code produced by the sound using an application called chirp.io.
Contestants successful in their attempt to decode the message would unlock 0.05 bitcoin worth about $40, which was donated by Tinkercoin, a Waterloo-based startup, and a local bitcoin enthusiast. Chris Skory of New York was the winner.

Over the past few months, an array of merchants has experimented with the virtual currency and even promoted their products by accepting bitcoins. At the present time, bitcoiners can purchase a sandwich at Subway, plane tickets through CheapAir, cosmetic surgery from Vanity Cosmetic Surgery and even fly to space with Virgin Galactic.
