Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) Shopping Express has begun to amass a cadre of delivery vans which presently fuel the developing delivery service. Google Shopping Express is operating in areas of New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. As expected, Google is working to expand those services, but is reportedly taking a different approach to the expansion, at least temporarily.
Google Shopping Express recently announced that the overnight delivery service that it is currently providing in major cities will be expanded significantly to cover a large swath of Northern California. The expansion will be possible due to Google contracting with “major shipping carriers” to ensure that items purchased before 7 P.M. will be delivered the following day.
It is anticipated that Google Shopping Express will continue to expand to other less densely populated parts of the country by similar means. As markets show potential, Google Shopping Express will likely manage that expansion by working with other carriers to ensure the deliveries can be made.
In dense, urban environments, the Google Shopping Express vans make a lot of sense. The vans are easy to maneuver in the city and can deliver many orders in a single trip. In rural areas, it makes much more financial sense to rely on shippers who are already making deliveries to those areas rather than taking a van out to deliver just an order or two.
Google Shopping Express is an online market that directs online orders to stores such as Walgreens, Target, Toys R Us and more. The store packs the orders, notifies Google when the order is ready, Google picks the package up and delivers it to the customers. Google Shopping Express was developed to compete with Amazon, providing similar items to its customers in a shorter turnaround time.
