Finally, Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) has released Facebook Messenger for Windows phone users, which can be downloaded through the Windows Phone store. The app has already been available on iOS and Android mobile devices.
The release was previously announced at last weeks’ Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Microsoft Windows Phone VP Joe Belfiore shared, “Facebook Messenger is probably one of the most requested individual apps we have our customers asking for.”
This iteration of the messenger app was first launched in October 2013. Anyone who uses it would be immediately available to each other. Moreover, Facebook has improved features such as design, function and speed.
Messenger works differently than text messaging because users can send multiple styles of messages including cartoon-like characters in an easy-to-read, animated format. Also, contacts who use messenger are tagged with a bright blue, circular badge. All other contacts have a Facebook badge.
Previously, users could not tell who had messenger and who didn’t. Also, Facebook Messenger allows users to send and receive messages much more quickly than with text messaging. Facebook hopes the app will be used in emergencies and for casual conversations.
Furthermore, Facebook noted that updates will be delivered much more quickly. Another feature of the app is it allows you to message Facebook users even if they are not your Facebook friends. All they have to be is a Messenger user.
Facebook Messenger was once a WhatsApp competitor, but since Facebook purchased WhatsApp, that is no longer the case. Perhaps Facebook will integrate some of WhatsApp’s features into future iterations of Facebook Messenger. However, it does look like Facebook is full steam ahead in the mobile and wireless world.
