Celebrities are starting to hop on the bitcoin train. Ashton Kutcher, Roseanne Barr, Drew Carey, Snoop Lion and a former Spice Girl are just some of the well-known faces to become bitcoin investors. Lately, however, sports stars have started to become interested in bitcoin too.
The latest athlete to get into the world of cryptocurrency is former NFL superstar and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco Johnson, who sent out a tweet Monday: “Discussing the concept of @Bitcoin with a friend. Can y’all show me how easy it is? #Bitcoin.”
After he tweeted out the message, a number of followers replied back and gave him some information, such as tips, articles and video tutorials. At one point, one Twitter user sent the six-time Pro Bowler a QR code with a small fraction of a bitcoin so he can start using the virtual currency.
“@ochocinco just sent you a few fractions of a penny’s worth lol but you should get the idea,” tweeted one user.
Johnson later retweeted an article entitled “Law professor: ‘Bitcoin is better than an offshore bank account.’”
The sports world has gotten involved in bitcoin this year.
It was reported earlier this year that Seattle Seahawks star Richard Sherman started to allow his customers to pay with bitcoins on his website.
The Sacramento Kings made national headlines when it announced that it would become the very first professional sports team to accept bitcoin payments for tickets, merchandise and various other items at its Bitcoin Team Store.
Shortly after, the major league soccer team the San Jose Earthquakes began to accept bitcoin.
