EU Privacy Rules to be Implemented on Google.com

Google Inc. will be asked to implement “right to be forgotten” on its websites besides the European Union’s demand of implementing rules by privacy regulators. This was revealed by reliable sources that are aware of the plan.

The privacy regulators will get together in Brussels where they will push Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) to accommodate the privacy requests that European citizens have demanded; according to these demands the company will have to extend EU requests to its main Google.com site in the U.S.

Google might also face criticism for regularly revealing the removed story links from Google’s website to the media. The people who want privacy and wanted to remain anonymous and make these requests do not like the fact that Google is talking to the media about them even after removing the info from its search engine.

Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, who is leading the European Union regulators in Brussels, is expected to present the ground rules of their expectations from Google Inc. today.

EU flag

Google has a big market in Europe and lately the company is being accused of violating privacy of the EU residents. As a result of these privacy issues it is possible that there might be a break up between the European Union and Google Inc. According to analysts EU’s forced implementation of rules on Google’s website may lead to the break up. However it is highly probable that EU will sort out the issues with Google without having to go to such extremes.

Eric Schmidt, the chairman of Google said that European Union’s top court in May came up with a ruling according to which Google was asked to remove or break links about people that they declare to be unnecessary or irrelevant. However, Schmidt said that this ruling did not have to be stretched to the U.S site.

The verdict will become active on various links on Google sites that are still visible in Europe. Regulators have also criticized that the information that is blocked on European websites is still available on Google in other countries which according to them is not fair. The European Union meeting is still developing and as per some sources the regulators might make some amendments to the demands before making it public.

According to European Commission Google Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) search market in Europe is less than 5%. Google is known for its other businesses such as its line of Android phones, Google mail etc but it is mainly a search engine and therefore bringing an end to the search services of Google in European countries might not be as easy as it sounds. Google until now has been open to the criticism that has been thrown its way and has tried it’s best to satisfy its users by attending to their complaints and taking necessary steps to rectify them. However European Union feels that Google’s privacy changes do not meet the requirements of the European Union data protection laws which is why they are so adamant on presenting an outline of their expectations to the company.

Whether EU and Google will be able to sort out their differences or not is something that will be seen once the meeting ends and the regulators declare their demands.
