‘TiVo Mega’ Ultimate DVR with 26,000 hours of SD Video

TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ:TIVO) unveiled a prototype of its brand new TiVo Mega on Monday, a DVR that has 24 terabytes of recording storage, which can record 4,000 hours of high definition content or three years worth of television in standard definition.

The new DVR, which is currently being developed by the company, is expected to be released to the general public early next year and come with a price-tag of approximately $5,000 – this includes a lifetime subscription to TiVo’s service.

The DVR will also consist of a number of new features, including streaming the content to the users’ smartphone and tablets, downloading programs to devices and recording six channels at the same time.

Developers say the new TiVo Inc. Mega can function as an entire home DVR that permits users to watch different shows at different times. The DVR can be controlled through a remote control or an app. Each data drive can be swapped as well.

“Size matters. People hate being forced to delete cool stuff from their DVR before they want to or finding a TV show they had recorded is now gone,” said Ira Bahr, TiVo chief marketing officer, in a statement. “Now, with TiVo Mega they can always know their show or movie is still there to watch later. TiVo Mega offers more than twelve times the storage of any cable or satellite DVR (and) is the solution for the power user who wants to record everything.”

Other abilities come with a personalized dashboard that offers the user what to watch, editorial collections of programming and Ethernet or Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) network connectivity.

Images of the latest TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ:TIVO) Mega DVR show a behemoth of a machine. Rather than placing it under your television, though, consumers can simply hide the rack-mountable DVR elsewhere.
